Dr. Delia Esparza grew up in El Paso, TX, in a large Mexican-American family as the oldest of eight children. She states her family remains close and notes that family is generally important in Hispanic communities as it is in many other cultures. She speaks Spanish fluently. She is the wife of a Vietnam veteran. They have been married for 29 years. She is also a mother and grandmother. Her professional education includes a bachelor science degree in Nursing Science from the University of Texas at Austin in 1974, a master’s degree in Psychiatric Nursing Science from the University of Colorado, Boulder, in1976 and a doctorate in Psychiatric Nursing Science from the University of Teas at Austin in 1990. She has more than 40 years of experience as a therapist including 23 years at the Austin Vet Center where she specialized in treating veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder from theatre of war trauma or from military sexual trauma.
